Natural Ways to Manage Asthma
Though asthma prevention is the best thing to aim at, you may develop this condition if you’re genetically predisposed to it.
But you need not worry as here, we’ve listed some easy-to-do and natural ways for asthma attack treatment.
Herbs naturally cure any disease without causing any side effects. The most common ones are:
Ginger:
Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and reduces airway inflammation. It also inhibits airway contraction.
Licorice:
Licorice reduces the inflammation of bronchial tubes, calms the airways, and restores normal breathing. It is also a great immunity booster.
Garlic:
This is also an anti-inflammatory herb that clears congestion in the lungs. It also has antiviral and antibiotic properties.
Oregano:
Oregano is rich in flavonoids, carvacrol, and terpenes: these help in cleansing the lungs.
2. Recommended diet
If you have asthma, take a Vitamin C and E-rich diet and one that has beta carotene, flavonoids, Omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and selenium.
Also, avoid trans fat and have plenty of fresh and seasonal fruits & vegetables. Eat moderately at regular intervals instead of bingeing on food all at once, leading to obesity.
Besides, use allergy-proof covers for mattresses and pillows. Don’t keep stuffed toys and carpets in the bedroom. Avoid sitting or roaming in areas where someone smokes.
Then, keep the bathroom clean. Exercise daily to reduce stress levels and don’t use harsh chemicals like products for washing and cleaning.
3. Then, there are a few home remedies
Boil around nine cloves of garlic in half a cup of milk and drink this before sleeping at night; mix half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder along with one teaspoon of honey. Have this before sleeping; add one teaspoon of honey in hot water & sip slowly; pepper and chilly open the airways & stimulate fluids in the throat, mouth, & lungs; and asthmatic people are suggested to have coffee.
You can also mix a little camphor in some mustard oil & then massage it on the chest of the asthmatic person; meditate regularly; have around three glasses of orange juice; soak a single tsp of fenugreek seeds in a cup of water overnight and strain it the next morning. Add one tsp of honey & some ginger juice to this mixture and consume it during morning and evening.
Consuming onions mitigates the effects of asthma; neem works wonders in treating asthma as it is anti-allergic, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, & purifies the blood; and takes peppermint tea regularly.
4. Further, identify & eliminate triggers like:
Smoke from tobacco and burning of grass or wood; household pets like cats and dogs; mold; dust mites; air pollution; cockroaches; emotional stress; exercise, and cold air.
5. Also, make better lifestyle choices:
Quit smoking, get enough sleep, maintain moderate weight, practice stress management methods like deep breathing and mindfulness, and be physically active. All this helps in asthma prevention.
6. Do Yoga, as it:
Mitigates asthma symptoms; reduces the frequency of asthma attacks; improves blood flow; enhances lung capacity; helps the body respond better to medication.
7. Use your inhaler properly
Here’s how you do it:
After opening your inhaler, shake it properly.
Then, exhale and hold your breath. Place the inhaler in the mouth.
Take a deep breath in for about ten seconds. Now, revert to your normal breathing pattern.
8. Do not self-medicate
Self-medication can cause adverse side effects. So, always consult your GP before you take any kind of medicine.
9. Also, resort to these breathing techniques:
Papworth method
In this technique, the diaphragm & nose are used to develop helpful breathing patterns, which must be applied to those activities that cause your asthma to flare up.
Buteyko breathing technique
This technique involves a pattern of breathing exercises that reduce asthma symptoms via slow & gentle breathing.
In this technique, the focus is on breathing out of the nose and not the mouth as the former could dry out the airways.
10. Consume Omega-3 oils
Omega-3 oils are found in flax seeds and fish and have many health benefits: these improve lung function in asthmatic patients.
But, do consult your doctor before increasing your Omega-3 intake.
We hope that this helped. For more guidance, reach out to the experts at Hale Road Medical.
